Although many see Bari as a port city and a gateway to other destinations on the Adriatic Sea, those who take the time to stay a while will find a wide variety of exciting and unique things to see and do.

Boasting a rich history that is still evident today throughout its many architectural sites and monuments, Bari is a great place for sightseeing. Featuring a unique culinary style and a variety of delicious street foods, it is ideal for foodies and cooks. Known for its wonderful coastal location, it makes for the perfect beach getaway for those looking to relax, experience water sports, or simply enjoy the natural views. There is literally something for everyone to enjoy in Bari.

FESTIVALS & EVENTS

Throughout the year, Bari hosts a variety of local events and festivals that reflect the area’s cultural history. Travelers will enjoy experiencing these exciting and unique events among the locals.

In March, Bari hosts one of Italy’s most renowned film festivals, the Bari International Film Festival (Bif&ST). Every year, nearly 70,000 people travel to Bari to experience the best of film during the eight-day event.

In May, travelers can attend Sagra di Maggio, a series of religious and cultural events over a whole weekend that celebrate Bari’s patron saint – Saint Nicolas. Featuring parades in historic dress, a procession that travels from Castello Svevo to the Basilica di San Nicola, concerts, and a massive fireworks display, this is Bari’s liveliest annual event.

September holds a couple of unique and entertaining events for travelers to enjoy. There is the Fiera Del Levante, which attracts over a million visitors and features 2,000 exhibitors from a wide range of industries. There is also the Festival Mousike, an ancient Mediterranean music festival that has been attracting music fans for over 20 years.

SEASON ACTIVITIES

While a destination on the coast may not be the first place to come to mind when thinking of a festive holiday, Bari transforms during Christmastime, creating a wonderful environment full of lights, music, and holiday spirit.

Piazza Ferrarese – a square in the city – boasts a gorgeous Christmas tree and beautiful holiday decorations. A gospel choir and street performers fill the square with amazing festivity while visitors shop and explore. Another square, Piazza Umberto, holds a fantastic “Santa’s Village” which is built just for the holiday, and is a nod to Bari’s patron saint, Saint Nicholas.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

One of Bari’s greatest draws for travelers is its wonderful location on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Its panoramic views beg travelers to get outdoors and enjoy the beauty that is Bari.

For some sightseeing with natural views, visit Fortino Sant’Antonio Abate. This structure, originally used for military defense, is located right on the water and provides amazing views of the old section of Bari and the Adriatic Sea.

To take a walk while enjoying the seaside sights, visit Lido San Francesco, a stretch of beach located east of old town Bari featuring fun activities and, of course, a stunning beach view. Another great seaside walk to experience is Lungomare Nazario Sauro.

Stretching nearly 3,280 feet, this scenic promenade allows travelers to enjoy sea views while taking in the unique, local architecture.

For outdoorsy travelers hoping to get in some physical activity while enjoying the views, visit Alta Murgia National Park. Located just South of Bari, this massive park – covering 260 square miles – offers ample opportunity for hiking, cycling, and viewing wildlife.

To experience the rich culture of Bari, visit Piazza Mercantile – a square that almost transports visitors back in time to old Italy. Multicolored shutters line the buildings, tiny balconies overlook the square, and locals enjoy coffee and conversation near the fountains.

INDOOR ACTIVITIES

After soaking up the Mediterranean sun, travelers can enjoy some of Bari’s most amazing and historical locations. Castello Svevo, built by the Normans in the twelfth century, is an enchanting and impactful castle which travelers can explore. Within the castle walls are centuries of history. Another must-see in Bari is the Basilica of San Nicola. Completed in 1197, this church is Bari’s most famous site because it holds the remains of the city’s patron saint – St. Nicolas. A pilgrimage destination for several different religions, it contains priceless holy relics.

A lesser known but no less spectacular site in Bari is the Cathedral of San Sabino. The main church of the diocese, it depicts some of the most amazing Romanesque architecture in the Apulia region and houses religious relics of Bishop San Sabino.

Fans of theater absolutely must see a show in the Teatro Petruzzelli – the city’s largest theater. As the fourth largest theater in Italy, it often hosts a variety of famous musicians and is home to amazing Opera performances and theater productions.

Another place to enjoy time in Bari indoors is the Historical Museum, which displays the cultural and architectural history of the city.

SHOPPING

If looking to take home a piece of Bari, enjoy some shopping throughout the city at one of the area’s many stores. Borgo Murattiano is a bustling shopping area that is strikingly modern in comparison to Old Bari. Travelers can also visit Via Sparano – the newest district of Bari – where there are a wide variety of modern stores and designer boutiques, as well as bars, restaurants, and coffee shops.

Also in Via Sparano is Palazzo Mincuzzi, a nineteenth century building composed of stunning Liberty (Art Nouveau) style architecture. The interior, decorated with wrought iron railing and glass tiles, transports travelers back in time for a unique shopping experience.

If visiting during Christmastime, a must-see is the Christmas market in Bari, which boasts more than 40 vendors selling traditional crafts and handmade items.

FAMILY & KIDS

In addition to exploring the ancient streets of the Old Town where history comes alive, Bari is home to several family activities that kids of all ages may enjoy. One of the most popular is Bari’s Planetarium, which is the largest in Southern Italy. The twinkling stars of the night sky will absolutely fascinate young travelers. Throughout the year, the Planetarium also hosts film screenings, live events, and astronomy workshops.

There are several castles to explore in and around the city, such as Centurione Castle, which is located in the town of Sammichele di Bari. Commonly called Caracciolo, this sixteenth century fortress currently houses the Museum of Peasant Culture.

The town of Sannicandro di Bari is also home to a historic castle. Portions of the current structure were designed by the Byzantines, while other parts were designed by the Swabians. For centuries, the fortress served a defensive role against Saracen raids. Several of the castle’s fortified towers can still be admired to this day.

UNIQUE EXPERIENCES

When visiting Bari, there are a few activities that one must do to experience the true uniqueness of the city.
