Day 01: ROME

Arrival in Rome and transfer to the hotel on your own. Use your time at leisure to get acquainted with this enchanting city until the evening, when you will meet with your tour assistant who will provide information regarding your travel itinerary. Overnight stay at your hotel in Rome.

Day 02: ROME

Breakfast at the hotel. In the morning, enjoy your time at leisure to explore Rome at your own pace. Discover the beautiful fountains and squares of Rome, enjoy a cappuccino and an Italian pastry in one of the many outdoor cafés, or attend the Papal Audience in Saint Peter's Square (on Wednesday mornings only). In the afternoon, you will join a sightseeing tour along the Appian Way, viewing ancient ruins and churches such as the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the Scala Santa (Holy stairs) and the Christian Catacombs. Dinner at a typical trattoria, among the locals and far from the tourist traps. Overnight at your hotel in Rome.

Day 03: ROME

After breakfast, you'll enjoy a morning at leisure. You may wish to take this opportunity to visit the Colosseum and the Roman Forum (optional, not included), or the Villa Borghese Gallery (optional, not included and entrance reservations required), with numerous important pieces of art. In the afternoon, you will visit the Vatican Museums, a repository for centuries of splendid art and history. You'll marvel at this intersection of faith and beauty, which includes a visit of the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. Return to your hotel. Dinner on your own and overnight in Rome.

Day 04: ROME, TARQUINIA, TUSCANIA, CAPRAROLA, CORTONA

You'll enjoy breakfast at the hotel, before departing for Tarquinia and Tuscania, ancient sites of the Etruscans, a culturally rich civilization based in the Italian peninsula that predated the Romans. After visiting this remarkable area, the tour moves on to Caprarola, in the Viterbo area, to visit the Villa Farnese complex and gardens, considered to be among the most beautiful in Italy. The journey will continue along the hill country towards the town of Cortona in Tuscany where you will enjoy a nice dinner at your hotel and then rest.

Day 05: CORTONA

After a tasty breakfast, you'll spend the day touring Cortona. This ancient town bears the legacy of the Etruscans, and is considered one of the oldest cities in Tuscany. Admire the breathtaking scenery overlooking the vineyards and enjoy the typical small town Italian lifestyle. During this time you may wish to visit some of Cortona's famous sights such as the Cathedral or the Etruscan Academy Museum. Dinner will be enjoyed at a local trattoria, where you'll sample the finest recipes of Tuscany.

Day 06: CORTONA, SIENA, SAN GIMIGNANO, FLORENCE 

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and then leave for the medieval cities of Siena and San Gimignano. Both are rich in history and have a scenic atmosphere, ensuring that you'll enjoy a step back in time while visiting these Tuscan jewels. Have lunch at a farmhouse filled with the bounty of Tuscany, including a wine tasting, before moving on to the hotel in Florence for the night.

Day 07: FLORENCE

After breakfast at the hotel, you'll take a guided walking tour of Florence. Known as the "Cradle of the Renaissance," you'll marvel at the magnificent works of art and architecture, including the Cathedral with Brunelleschi's Dome, the Ponte Vecchio and the Baptistery, with doors so lovely that Michelangelo likened them to the Gates of Heaven. In the afternoon you will have free time to explore Florence on your own. You may wish to visit the Uffizi Gallery or the Accademia Gallery with Michelangelo’s David or consider a side trip to Pisa or Lucca (not included). You'll spend the night at your hotel in Florence.

Day 08: FLORENCE, VENICE

You'll enjoy breakfast, before boarding the high speed train to Venice. Speed, comfort and style are on the agenda, as you glide through the Tuscan and Emilia Romagna landscape. The afternoon in Venice will be free to spend as you please, perhaps with a gondola ride (not included), until your candlelit dinner in a local restaurant on the Grand Canal. You’ll return to the hotel for the night.

Day 09: VENICE

After breakfast, you’ll go on a guided walking tour of Venice, stopping to see such delights as the Doge's Palace, the Bridge of Sighs, St. Mark’s Square and St. Mark’s Basilica. In the afternoon, you’ll be free to explore on your own, imagining the paths of Marco Polo, before returning to your hotel for the night.

Day 10: VENICE

After breakfast at the hotel, you will have the rest of the day to yourself. Perhaps you’ll go an excursion to the islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello (not included), stroll through the hidden streets and canals of Venice, shop for some Murano glass or Venetian masks or visit the Rialto Bridge area. The day will end at your hotel for your last overnight stay in Venice.
