Once the plane has landed in Milan, collect your checked luggage and travel to your hotel via private car transfer. Located in Milan’s historical city center, your hotel will be in the perfect location for independent exploration of Milan’s cultural gems. You will also be within walking distance of many museums, restaurants and boutiques. After checking into the hotel, make your way to the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie, which houses the famous Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci. Upon arrival, begin your timed entrance and admire the skill required to execute this renowned masterpiece. Afterwards, we recommend taking a stroll through Milan’s historic streets to discover a few of its highlights on your own. During this time, you may wish to stop by the Castello Sforzesco, an emblem of the city, to explore the castle or to simply unwind in the adjacent Parco Sempione, a large park in Milan’s city center. In the evening, head to a historic restaurant and enjoy your first dinner featuring a local specialty, such as cotoletta alla milanese, which is a breaded veal cutlet. When your dinner has concluded, return to your hotel for an overnight stay.
Enjoy a hearty breakfast to prepare for a full day of sightseeing in Milan’s fabulous city center. Afterwards, begin your walking tour with your guide. Since you will be participating in a private tour, the guide will be able to customize the itinerary based on your particular interests or requests. With this being said, a few must-see highlights include the Galleria of Vittorio Emanuele II, La Scala Theater and the mesmerizing Duomo, which is the largest church in Italy. When you part ways with your guide, take a moment to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.
After breakfast, check out of your hotel and begin your journey south to the beautiful Umbria region. Along the way, stop in the historic city of Modena where you will enjoy a private walking tour. Your guide will lead you through the city center and provide historical context for the main monuments including the Cathedral, Piazza Grande and the Torre della Ghirlandina, which together are a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. When the tour concludes, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant and do not miss this opportunity to taste the famous Balsamic Vinegar of Modena!
Once you finish breakfast at the hotel, depart for a very sweet excursion. Your morning will be spent at the Perugina House of Chocolate, a museum dedicated to one of Italy’s historic chocolate companies that is based in Perugia. Enjoy a tour of the museum where you will learn about the history of Perugina as well as the process behind some of Italy’s most delicious chocolate. There will also be opportunities to taste this special treat for yourself.
Today you will spend time in the famous town of St. Francis and visit one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in all of Italy. Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, then depart for Assisi via private driver. Upon arrival in Assisi, meet with your guide and begin your walking tour of the historical city center. Along the way you will admire several key highlights including the Basilica of San Francesco, which is actually divided into an Upper Church and a Lower Church. The Basilica alone is filled with many remarkable artistic treasures, such as the series of frescoes by Giotto that depict the life of St. Francis. Other must-sees in Assisi include the Basilica of Santa Chiara, the Rocca Maggiore, the Cathedral of San Ruffino and of course the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, which is unique due to the fact that it houses the Porziuncola, a tiny church in which the Franciscan movement was founded. At the end of the tour, unwind during lunch at a family-owned restaurant and take a moment to process all of the remarkable art and history you absorbed.
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, then depart for the rolling hills of the Umbrian countryside. Though not as well-known among international travelers, the Umbria countryside is just as picturesque as its cousin, the Tuscan countryside. Admire the scenic panoramas before stopping at a local winery where you will enjoy a tour of the grounds as well as a tasting of locally-produced wines. During this time, you will learn about the historic production process that makes Umbrian wine unique. Enjoy time at leisure at the winery, then return to Perugia and take a moment to freshen up at the hotel. Afterwards, sit down for your final dinner in Perugia and celebrate your time in this incredible region of Italy.
In the morning, check out of your hotel and depart for your last destination in Umbria: the charming, hilltop town of Orvieto. Admire the views as your driver takes you up the winding road to Orvieto’s historical city center. Then, meet with your private guide and enjoy a walking tour of Orvieto’s highlights. Not to be missed is the Cathedral, which is said to have one of the most beautiful facades in Italy. Other key sights include the Pozzo della Cava and the Well of St. Patrick. When you have parted ways with your guide, re-energize during lunch at a local restaurant then meet back with your driver to continue your journey to Rome.
After breakfast, head to the Colosseum to embark on a walking tour of the main highlights of Ancient Rome. The first stop will be the Colosseum and thanks to your skip-the-line entrance reservations you will maximize your sightseeing time. Follow your guide as you explore the different levels of the Colosseum and learn about its historical significance. Your guide will recount fascinating tales of the brave gladiators that once fought here. Afterwards, continue on to the Roman Forum, which was the political center of Ancient Rome. Here you will observe the ruins of many structures that were pivotal during the Roman Republic and Roman Empire. When the tour concludes, head to the summit of the Palatine Hill to admire remarkable views of Rome from above. Then, stop for lunch at a local restaurant or sample some Roman street food, such as pizza al taglio.
Your final full day in Rome will be dedicated to the magnificent Vatican. Once you finish breakfast, make your way to the Vatican Museums, one of the largest museum complexes in the world. As you stroll through these hallowed halls with your guide, you will admire many fascinating works of art including the frescoes of the Raphael Rooms and the stunning Sistine Chapel. Afterwards, continue on to St. Peter’s Basilica and spend some time inside the largest church in the world. The guide will provide historical context and explain the significance of some of the major highlights, such as the Pietà sculpture by Michelangelo. The tour will conclude inside of the Basilica, which means that you will be able to continue exploring this fascinating church independently. We recommend climbing to the top of the dome to admire the scenery and visiting the underground crypt area where several Popes are buried. When you exit the Basilica, take a moment to admire the impressive colonnade in St. Peter’s Square before stopping by a local trattoria or osteria for lunch.
