Along the way you will also enjoy an excursion to the Catacombs and a walking tour of the Vatican Museums. Depart for Tuscany and enjoy stops in two towns with ancient Etruscan origins as well as the renowned Villa Farnese. For the final part of the tour you will be based in Cortona, where your family will enjoy visiting historic monuments, admiring the views of the picturesque Tuscan countryside and spending time together during leisurely meals at local restaurants. Between the iconic sights of the Eternal City and the stunning natural beauty of the Tuscan countryside, an unforgettable family vacation is guaranteed!
Upon arrival in Rome, make your way to your centrally located 4 star hotel. Once you complete check in, you will have the rest of the day to start exploring the city center of Rome, which is filled with historic monuments that will capture the imagination of travelers of all ages. Enjoy a nice family dinner at a local restaurant within walking distance of your hotel and then settle in for an overnight stay at your hotel.
After breakfast at your hotel, you will have the full morning dedicated to exploring the city center of Rome. Take your time visiting an array of unique sights that will be of interest to the whole family such as stunning Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain—be sure to toss in a few coins and secure your family’s return trip to Rome! Break for lunch at a local restaurant before departing on an afternoon tour of several religious sites and the Catacombs located just outside of Rome. During the tour you will have the chance to see the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Basilica of St. John Lateran. Upon arrival at the Catacombs you will take a walking tour of the ancient complex led by a local guide. Dating back to the 2nd century AD, young travelers will be amazed as they witness this unique history up close. Afterwards, head back to Rome’s historical city center and visit a local trattoria for dinner followed by an evening stroll. You won’t want to miss the unique sight of Rome by night and be sure to grab some gelato prior to making your way back to the hotel.
Enjoy a nice breakfast at the hotel to start your day off right. Afterwards, you will have the morning free for more sightseeing. We recommend bringing the kids to the Colosseum and Roman Forum to see where gladiators once battled and learn about day-to-day life for citizens of Ancient Rome (optional tour, not included. Advanced tour reservations recommended). Take a break for lunch, perhaps sampling some Roman street food such as pizza or supplì, which are fried balls of rice filled with mozzarella. After lunch, you will head to the Vatican area where you will enjoy a kid-friendly walking tour led by an expert local guide. As you make your way through the different parts of the Vatican Museums, such as the Tapestry Gallery and the Raphael Rooms, your guide will recount vivid stories and bring the history of the Vatican to life for the whole family. During the tour you will also have the chance to visit the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica. Once the tour ends, we recommend climbing to the top of the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica to admire stunning views of Rome from above. Before leaving the Vatican area, younger travelers may be interested in visiting Castel Sant’Angelo, which at one time was a papal fortress. Return to your hotel where you can unwind before going out for your last dinner in Rome.
After breakfast at the hotel, say “Arrivederci Roma!” and travel to the breathtaking Tuscan countryside. Along the way you will stop in Tarquinia and Tuscania, two ancient cities with Etruscan origins. Younger travelers may be interested in visiting the Etruscan necropolises present in both towns. The next stop will be Caprarola, positioned in the province of Viterbo, where your family will stop to visit the Renaissance-Era Villa Farnese with historic interiors and lush gardens. Experience daily life for a Renaissance noble family before heading north through the Tuscan countryside to reach Cortona. Check into your hotel in Cortona’s city center and enjoy your first taste of Tuscan cuisine during dinner this evening.
Share a nice breakfast with your family at the hotel and then embark on your discovery of Cortona, one of the most beautiful Tuscan towns. Like many towns in the area, Cortona’s origins are ancient and date back to the Etruscan period. Etruscan influences can still be observed in town today as the Etruscan city wall still stands. Explore Cortona’s ancient winding streets at your own pace stopping to admire the local scenery as well as any shops or museums that may be of interest to your family. Consider visting a few of Cortona’s well-known sites such as the Cathedral, which dates back to the 11th century, and the Etruscan Academy Museum, where young history lovers can learn more about the Etruscan civilization. In the evening, enjoy your final dinner at a local trattoria where the friendly owners will make you feel as if your family is part of their family.
After your last breakfast in Cortona, you will transfer to the airport in Rome, Rome’s city center or Florence (to be determined in advance based on your post-tour plans). This marks the end of our services.
