Naples is the southern culinary capital of Italy. The Pizza was born here in honor of Queen Margherita di Savoia in 1889. The queen was visiting the city …after the unification of Italy (1861) and the Neapolitan served her a pizza topped with ingredients in the colors of the Italian flag: green (basil), white (mozzarella) and red (tomato). It was a great success and since then, this particular kind of pizza; which has been named after the queen, has become the most popular pizza in Italy and in the world. It is called Pizza Margherita.
