Designated an UNESCO world heritage site in 1996, Alberobello is a fascinating mix of history and architecture. The town is comprised of Trulli, an ancient form of home building, first brought into mainstream use as a means of avoiding taxes. The method stuck, and now generations of Italians have lived, worked and worshiped in these "temporary" unique buildings.
The Trulli are curious, white, rounded houses, with conical, grey stone roofs; you can admire them only in Alberobello, in the heart of the Valley of Itria.

The region is well known for producing exquiste handiworks, including needleworks and laces. Wines and olive oil are another important product from this area.
