This description page of Piedmont, will guide you in planning your trip to Italy and help you to find useful travel information about the history of this Italian Region.

The earliest known inhabitants of Piemonte were the Celts, Liguri and Romans. Around the 5th century, the region fell prey to military invasions and was completely ameliorated. The Lombards soon reinstated order until the 8th century when the Franks invaded and introduced the feudal system. Approximately, two hundred years later, came the rise of the free communes which included the Piemonte regions of Asti, Alba and Torino.

After a war between France and Spain the Cateau cambresis Treaty gave part of Piedmont to the Savoy Duke Emanuele Filberto. Other cities in the region were given to France. In the 18th century, the Savoys formed a unified region and Torino served as the first capital of a unified Italy. The House of Savoy reigned for nine centuries and even maintained control when Emmanuel II was declared king in 1861. The Savoys continued to rule until the monarchy was abolished in 1946.
